The Laramie Project

Sun 11 th – Tue 13 th October, Wed 18 th – Sat 21 st November, 8pm Sun 22 nd November 2009, 4pm -£10/£8

The Laramie Project

In October 1998 a twenty-one-year-old student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped, severely beaten and left to die, tied to a fence in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming. His bloody, bruised and battered body was not discovered until the next day, and he died several days later in an area hospital. His name was Matthew Shepard, and he was the victim of this assault because he was gay. Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project made six trips to Laramie over the course of a year and a half in the aftermath of the beating and during the trial of the two young men accused of killing Shepard. They conducted more than 200 interviews with the people of the town. Some people interviewed were directly connected to the case, and others were citizens of Laramie, and the breadth of their reactions to the crime is fascinating. Kaufman and Tectonic Theater members have constructed a deeply moving theatrical experience from these interviews and their own experiences. THE LARAMIE PROJECT is a breathtaking theatrical collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable.

"One of the ten best plays of the year. A pioneering work of theatrical reportage and a powerful stage event." —Time Magazine.
"Astonishing. Not since Angels in America has a play attempted so much: nothing less than an examination of the American psyche at the end of the millennium." —Associated Press.
"There emerges a mosaic as moving and important as any you will see on the walls of the churches of the world…nothing short of stunning…you will be held in rapt attention." —New York Magazine.

EARLY BIRD SPECIAL : tickets £20. Limited offer – ends October 14 th 2009. Workshop in Virtual Reality Theatre

With Robyn Stuart and Brian Curson of alKamie (Virtual Reality Theatre) www.alKamie.co.uk

"I want to open the gate through which people can pass and leave behind their rational minds..." Phillippe Genty (2007)

Founded in 2000 alKamie has been researching combining live onstage performances within virtual spaces. With their Virtual Reality Theatre technology they create virtual environments for the physical performer.

“Modern cinematic language has taken many decades to evolve and is still evolving…it is the artistic combination of a whole gamut of techniques and technologies that create the final effect. In this sense, cinema is emergent, a whole greater than the sum of its component parts. In some ways we see ourselves as creating what could be a kind of new emergent cinema, but the emergent medium is onstage … For us live performance holds a very special place… The fast narratives of celluloid become possible onstage.”

Come and discover their take on this emergent medium … participants will be able to play with the technology in this workshop through guided facilitation … the possibilities are endless!!!!!
